Simulation of Stratocumulus in the CSU− CIMMS LES: Comparisons to GCSS Results

Stratocumulus simulation in a 2D Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model is performed, using the CSU−CIMMS LES written by Marat Khairoutdinov and Yefim Kogan. The simulation is for an idealized nighttime stratocumulus−topped PBL described by the initial conditions as given in the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment Cloud System Study (GCSS) results paper (C.−H. Moeng, et. al. 1996.) The GCSS study included a study of several 3D LES and 2D cloud resolving models (CRMs) which the results of this 2D LES run will be compared to. While the CSU−CIMMS LES is capable of running as a 3D LES, the model was run as a 2D simulation due to computational restrictions; further research done by the author with the model will be ported to an MPI cluster, allowing the model to run in 3D mode.
